Is metformin effective for non-diabetic hypertensive patients?
Asked 3 years ago
My brother is hypertensive and moderately obese. I’m afraid he might be at risk of developing diabetes if we don't find a quick way to manage his hypertension and reduce his blood pressure. Can he take metformin if he is not diabetic?

Metformin is primarily used to lower sugar levels in diabetic patients and has minimal to no impact on blood pressure. One of the most important ways to manage his hypertension and prevent the onset of diabetes will be weight management through exercise and a healthy, balanced diet. Using metformin inappropriately may cause more harm than good if he is not diabetic. Consult with a medical professional regarding your concerns, before taking any medication.
