Insulin resistance causes compensatory hyperinsulinemia to maintain insulin levels. The result is an increase in blood insulin levels. In turn, elevated insulin levels increase blood flow, vasodilatation and blood glucose levels. A combination of these factors results in hypertension without treatment.
