Can unwanted weight gain from metformin increase blood pressure?
Asked 3 years ago
I’m on metformin for my type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). I have gained some weight since taking it, and I’m concerned that this will increase my blood pressure and possibly result in hypertension. I heard hypertensive diabetic patients often develop serious complications.

Metformin is not usually associated with weight gain (in fact, many patients lose weight when taking metformin). However, if you have experienced some weight gain, unfortunately any weight gain can increase your risk of developing hypertension. It is advised to try to implement some healthy lifestyle changes like exercise and a good, balanced diet in order to prevent this.
