Does caffeine affect a blood sugar test?
Asked 3 years ago
I drink a lot of energy drinks to help me get through my studies. However, ever since I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, my mom thinks I need to stop drinking them. Should I avoid drinking caffeine before my blood sugar test next week?

Coffee is generally not known to have any effect on raising blood sugar levels after having a cup; however, caffeine in coffee can increase insulin sensitivity in the body. Black coffee is advised as this is the least likely to raise your blood sugar levels. Some studies suggest that coffee may reduce your chances of developing diabetes type 2. As with medications, caffeine may affect everyone differently. Should you find yourself in a situation where you are struggling to maintain stable blood sugar levels, it may be helpful to reduce your caffeine intake.
Making smart dietary choices in all aspects of your day is extremely helpful in managing your blood sugar levels. Making an effort here will reap you far greater health benefits than cutting coffee out completely. There is a study that suggests that people who didn't consume coffee on a particular day may have higher blood sugar levels than those that had a cup of coffee during the day. Exercise is a great way to further gain control over your blood sugar levels. You can start with walking and then build from there.
