What exercises should be avoided with high blood pressure?

Asked 3 years ago

Hi, what are the do's and don't's when it comes to exercising with high blood pressure? I am an obese person who wants to lose weight, but I'm concerned that I may be doing myself more harm than good thanks to hypertension.

Exercise does infact have positive benefits for people who have hypertension. Low intensity to moderate exercise is safe for people with controlled blood pressure. Exercise will increase your cardiovascular capacity, strengthening the heart and constantly activating the smooth muscles in the cardiovascular system to contract and relax. The functioning of the system decreases as one ages and the arteries may become stiff, thus not being able to adjust to blood pressure changes in the body. Exercise will help prevent this by stimulating the arteries to widen and contract, thus lowering your normal resting blood pressure.

Avoiding exercises that place excessive stress on the cardiovascular system, such as weight lifting, should be avoided. Low intensity and moderate exercise such as cycling, dancing, swimming or jogging are safer options. Ensure that exercise does not raise your heart rate into dangerous ranges and consult with a medical professional if any adverse symptoms arise during or after exercise.
