Can pilates aggravate back pain?
Asked 3 years ago
Hi, I am an obese woman suffering from back pain, and I'm looking to lose weight. Would pilates be a good idea for an obese beginner, or would it be too dangerous?

Pilates will be safe for you, provided you start with the beginner phases of pilates. Pilates will be beneficial to your overall health in improving your posture, muscle strength, and balance. Pilates may not, however, be effective in helping you lose weight. Cardiovascular exercise such as jogging, swimming and cycling will be most effective in helping you lose weight. Exercises making up the practice of pilates can be done to improve strength and flexibility, thus reducing your back pain.
Don't attempt anything you feel you are not capable of doing; start slowly and build from there. The habit of daily exercise will show its positive benefits after some time.
