Why is type 1 diabetes a risk factor for hypertension?
Asked 3 years ago
My little sister has type 1 diabetes and I'm trying to learn more about it. I understand that the body attacks the insulin-producing cells in the body which means that you have high blood sugar levels. However, I don't understand why this is a risk factor for hypertension. Can someone please help me understand? Thanks!

High blood sugar levels can cause damage to tissues and organs (e.g. the kidney and blood vessels) that maintain healthy blood pressure. Thus, type 1 diabetes is a risk factor for hypertension. It also means that if you can control the risk factors of type 1 diabetes, you can limit the risks of hypertension.
