Why is spironolactone used for resistant hypertension?

My doctor gave me a prescription for spironolactone for my resistant hypertension. Why is this medication used to treat spironolactone?

About 10% of all patients treated for hypertension have what is described as resistant hypertension. Spironolactone can be used in patients to safely and effectively manage blood pressure in people who are suffering with resistant hypertension. This medication is turned to when the highest tolerated doses of 3 hypertensive medications have not managed to control the blood pressure to relatively safe levels, to around 140/90 mm Hg.

This drug has best results when used in conjunction with other hypertension medications in managing your blood pressure levels.This drug has shown good results in effectively managing blood pressure in individuals with once thought to be resistant hypertension. This medication can come with some side effects occasionally. These side effects include; headaches, nausea, leg cramps, fatigue, changes in menstrual cycle, breast pain, abdominal cramps, and itchy skin, among others.
