Diuretics form part of the first-line therapy for hypertension before it becomes resistant. When resistant hypertension results, you must avoid high-dose diuretics if you have co-morbidities like gout, diabetes, or erectile dysfunction. Individuals with low potassium levels should also avoid thiazide diuretics.
