Resistant hypertension is diagnosed when a patient’s blood pressure cannot be effectively controlled using a combination of three antihypertensive medications, including diuretics. Uncontrolled hypertension can be dangerous and is linked to cardiovascular accidents, such as strokes, heart attacks and heart failure. Other conditions can also arise as a result of this condition, including kidney failure, memory issues, reduced visual acuity, and in males, erectile dysfunction. This is common in elderly people, where hardened and less responsive cardiovascular systems are commonly observed. As a result, the heart has to work harder to move blood through stiff and potentially narrow arteries.

High blood pressure can often go undiagnosed as it usually doesn't have any symptoms associated with this condition. It is therefore important to regularly and routinely check your blood pressure in an effort to safely manage this condition. There is medications out there to effectively manage resistant hypertension and reduce the chances of developing complications from this condition. It is helpful to work with your medical practitioner to find the optimal dosage to manage your condition. It may take some time to achieve a safe blood pressure, usually with alterations to the daily medications.

Should your father be experiencing side effects from medications or any other symptoms related to this condition, it is advised that he seek medical advice regarding this.
