Should I avoid caffeine when taking beta blockers?

Asked 3 years ago

I had a heart attack last month and have been taking beta blockers ever since. Should I avoid drinking caffeinated drinks while I'm taking beta blockers?

Coffee counteracts the adrenergic effect of beta-blockers, making them less effective. Coffee also increases the rate of metabolism of beta-blockers, reducing their half-life and activity time in the body. Thus, you should avoid taking coffee when you're actively taking beta-blockers.
