How does type 1 diabetes cause hypertension?

Asked 3 years ago

My father has type 1 diabetes. After his last doctor's visit, he was told that he has quite severe hypertension. Both he and I are trying to understand the correlation between diabetes and hypertension. How does type 1 diabetes cause hypertension?

A person with type 1 diabetes does not have enough insulin to absorb glucose, leading to higher blood glucose levels. High blood sugar levels can cause damage to tissues and organs (e.g. the kidney and blood vessels) that maintain healthy blood pressure. Consequently, type 1 diabetes can lead to hypertension.
