Do beta blockers weaken the heart?

Asked 3 years ago

My grandmother was prescribed beta blockers ever since she had a heart attack. Will these beta blockers weaken her heart?

No, it doesn't weaken the heart. It merely reduces the force with which the heart pumps blood. It does this by blocking the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline and slowing the heart rate. This reduces the oxygen demand of the heart and the frequency of angina.
