Can taking beta blockers affect sleep when taken at bed time?

Asked 3 years ago

I need to take beta blockers to help me lower my blood pressure. If I take them before bedtime, will they affect my sleep?

Taking beta-blockers has been linked to lowered melatonin levels in the body by blocking production of the hormone, which in turn potentially affects one’s sleep cycle. The hormone, melatonin, is released from the pineal gland in the brain and is closely linked to sleep regulation. High melatonin levels are seen in the evening and throughout the night; thereafter one generally has low melatonin levels during the day. Beta-blockers are usually advised to be taken in the evening, before bedtime, due to the potential effects of the medication.

Beta-blockers may slow your heart rate and lower your overall cardiac output. This could potentially make you feel dizzy and is usually not advised to be taken before activities. Your overall blood pressure is lowered though, reducing the cardiac output of your heart. Some people report having poor sleep quality when taking beta-blockers, with some studies pointing to the REM phase being affected. Consult with your medical practitioner about the best way to take your medications and any other questions you may have.
