Will I get hypertension if there's a family history of atherosclerosis?
Asked 3 years ago
I’ve heard that you are more likely to get high blood pressure if your parents had it. My mother had atherosclerosis, which developed from hyperinsulinemia, and my dad has diabetes. I'm very young, so I don't think I have it, but I'm worried I might. Does this mean that I am more at risk of getting hypertension at a later stage?

Your family history means you're at a higher risk of developing diabetes. However, it's not because of atherosclerosis. Hypertension can lead to atherosclerosis, and not the other way around. Regardless, you can limit your risks by proper lifestyle changes, including dietary changes, weight loss, and exercise.
