Will I be diabetic if I develop insulin resistance from hypertension?
Asked 3 years ago
Last year, I was diagnosed with hypertension during our annual health visit to our physician. My late father had high blood pressure due to his diabetes, so I was more likely to get it too, according to the physician. Am I more likely to become insulin resistant and possibly become diabetic?

If not well managed, hypertension can cause insulin resistance by altering insulin and glucose delivery to skeletal muscle cells. If you develop insulin resistance with hypertension, your risk of becoming diabetic increases significantly. However, with healthier choices (eating healthy, exercising regularly, and maintaining normal weight levels), the risk for insulin resistance reduces.
