Can metformin improve insulin resistance in HIV-infected people?
Asked 3 years ago
A family member of mine developed new-onset diabetes as a result of their HIV treatment. We knew that there would be possible chronic complications that would follow. I’m concerned that their treatment may clash with diabetes medication, and metformin might not be effective in improving insulin resistance in this case.

Multiple studies suggest that metformin may be able to improve insulin resistance in HIV-infected people. In reality, metformin increases insulin sensitivity and then decreases insulin sensitivity. It does this by activating AMPK, reducing sugar production in the body, and increasing glucose uptake by the skeletal cells after production.
