Can I get lactic acidosis from metformin while on ARV treatment?

Asked 3 years ago

I’m on stavudine as part of my ARV treatment. I also have insulin resistance and I’m worried that I might become diabetic and develop further complications like lactic acidosis. I want to take metformin to manage my insulin resistance, but I’m not sure if this will interact with my ARV treatment.

The chances of developing lactic acidosis due to metformin intake are high while you're on ARV treatment. Metformin prevents gluconeogenesis, thus blocking the effect of the enzyme that breaks down lactic acid. The breakdown causes lactic acid to build up in the body, resulting in lactic acidosis.
